Teresa of Avila: Interior
Castle
translated by Kiernan Kavanough, O.C.D. and Otilio Rodriguez,
O.C.D.
Teresa of Avila's mystical experiences would begin with a feeling
of God's presence that came upon her so unexpectedly and powerfully
thta she described the impact of these experiences as "I could
in now way doubt He was within me or I totally immersed in Him."
These episodes impacted St. Teresa to such an extent that the omnipresence
of God became the essential element of her spiritual teaching.
The Interior Castle by this 16th century Spanish mystic is perhaps
one of the greatest masterpieces of mystical experience ever written.
Teresa received the image of the whole book in a vision in which
she saw a "beautiful crystal globe like a castle" in which
she saw "seven dwelling plaes, and in the seventh, which was
in the center, the King of Glory dwelt in the greatest splendor."
